RDC provides subject matter experts and world-class consulting services, used by the Government of Canada, the Government of Nunavut as well as several private sector companies.

In addition, we assist with design of high performance transaction exchange systems as well as help companies meet national and international obligations when it comes to standards complaince.

RDC products and solutions support traditional Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) emerging Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) and any future transactions exchange formats on the workflow horizon. This is made possible by our unique methodology and architecture which allows us to configure and support virtually any kind of transaction set, using any international or proprietary standard for business messaging.

Value of EDI and XML

EDI and XML complement electronic commerce (EC) by enabling the computer-to-computer exchange of official business documents (e.g. purchase orders, invoices, bills of lading, customs documentation) at the application layer between two or more companies. EDI based EC platforms use a public messaging standard to flow information between trading partners, making commerce faster, more efficient, more cost effective and more responsive to its customers. For example, the cost of handling of paper documentation such as printing, postage, re-key of information into legacy systems are eliminated. This results in immediate savings for both trading partners. In addition, embedded compliance with international EDI standards creates confidence in the business community since exchange of information is governed by accepted business rules and NOT proprietary software, hardware or network technologies. This in turn simplifies integration of authoritative business data into existing enterprise management systems.

The Challenge

However, despite enormous potential for savings, electronic commerce has been slow to catch on. Integration of EDI or XML has been prohibitively expensive. Integration of business rules are complex, requiring specialized expertise, training, and dedicated “hybrid” software which has been historically incompatible with existing investments in office automation software and supporting hardware. Entry-level “Web EDI” has failed to offer the performance needed for complex “business-to-business” supply chain management. Add to this, the traditional costs associated with Value Added Networks, insecurity with respect to the Internet and it is easy to see why electronic commerce is not generally used, except by the largest of corporations and governments - organizations that can afford the cost of implementation.
